Who goes first? Pizza or sushi? A coin flip is the classic unbiased tie-breaker: each side has exactly a 50% chance on every flip, and past results never influence the next one. Ten heads in a row changes nothing about flip eleven, however loudly it feels otherwise.
The tally keeps count so a best-of-three can quietly become a best-of-thirty-one. How the underlying randomness works is covered on the FAQ page, and when the decision has more than two options, the list picker takes over.
